Not Your Average Rug – Alternative Fabrics for Beautiful Spaces

On every design project I do, my clients challenge me to learn something new or see things through a new perspective to understand their lives and comfort zones. I recently worked with a family that is allergic to wool and wanted an alternative fabric for rugs. I did a lot of research on different fibers and styles available, as well as cost options. One of the things I love most about working in residential design is getting to know the families I work with well enough to incorporate items that will be meaningful and make them comfortable.

While wool rugs are the old school standard, there are so many new options to love in every price point and style.

Bamboo Silk I’m in love with bamboo silk! I’ve really never experienced rugs so soft and lovely. The bamboo fibers have an elegant sheen. I also love that they are so sustainable and eco friendly. Why are we not doing more with bamboo!!
	Cotton Cotton rugs are a long-running classic. Lightweight and easy to wash, they are usually very budget friendly as well. This classic stripe has long been a favorite of mine to add a splash of color to a room.
Polypropylene This man-made fiber was originally used for indoor-outdoor styles but has been refined in recent years to have the look and feel of silk at a fraction of the price. Bonus: it’s also easy to clean!

	Natural Fibers Natural fiber rugs including seagrass, sisal and jute are hard-working and durable.
	There have been some really lovely mixes lately. I’m very partial to the jute/chenille mix; it adds fantastic texture to a room.
